In Memory of Eric Scott:
Eric Scott (More photos on Photo Galleries page)
In the evening of January 12, 2013, Eric departed this life and left behind his wife, a son, and a daughter, as well as other family members, and a host of family and friends. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Ranger. He served his community as a Durham County Sheriff's Deputy, attaining the rank of Captain, retiring with 30+ years of service. He loved the Lord and served Him at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. Eric was a wonderful photographer, and many of the pictures in our photo galaries are the proof of his work. He was a diver for the Sheriff's Department and a Basic Law Enforcement Trainer. Eric loved the outdoors, and was a very important member of the Ridgecrest Outdoor Ministries team. He gave many hours, blood, sweat, and tears helping to accomplish the mission of providing quality outdoor events, providing opportunities for the message of the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The measure of a man is displayed in the hearts of his family. For that reason, I share with you the words of his daughter:

- "It is with a proud and joyful heart that I can shout from the roof tops that at just after 8:30pm on January 12, 2013, my dad, Eric Scott, walked (probably not so gracefully and a good 15 minutes late, let's be honest..) through the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven. I have said many times over the last few days that no amount of time with my Papa Bear will ever be enough. And that's ok because he's at the Heavenly Table with my Jesus waiting for us to join him and spend an eternity in his arms next to Christ. One day, we will again have all the time in the world.
Pride may be a sin, but I have no shame in saying how proud I am of him as a husband to my mom for over 33 years, and a father to me, my brother, and my sister-in-law. I am so very proud of the young woman I have learned to be under his wise and unwavering guidance. I am proud to look like him, share his mannerisms, warped sense of humor, and love for photography, dogs, and God's creation. His are very big shoes to fill, but I will also be proud to, much like my brother, some day follow his footsteps into law enforcement."
Who We Are
It would be impossible to list the names of every individual who has participated in the work of this ministry. One thing is for sure, every act of service, kindness, support (financial, spiritual, physical, or material) was, is and will forever be appreciated. Your efforts helped to further the mission, tilled ground, planted seed, helped to bring about a harvest, some of which we will not experience until we reach Heaven. Remember, your works will not save you. We do not work for salvation. We work because of salvation, not to earn it. Works without faith are dead. They may further the mission, but they will not save you. Salvation is a free gift through the Grace and Mercy of our Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Where We've Been
Way back, around the year 2001, a group of men began meeting to pray, share their challenges, seek biblical wisdom, and encourage each other. We called it The Barnabas Gang, because Barnabas was know as an encourager. The faces changed, the meeting places changed, men were led to Christ, others came to know Him, and each other, and become stronger in the faith. One of the men who was a focus of our prayers was a man named Rod King. Rod was dire need of a liver because the one he was born with had seen it's better days. As Bill Cosby said, in his hilarious story about having his tonscils out, it had gone so far as to join the other side, and was working to kill him.
God provided a liver for Rod, and after he recovered, Rod has worked overtime to serve his Lord, and his fellow man. The Lord worked overtime to put all of the pieces together and put into motion this Outdoor Ministry. We can see His hand working in so many lives, for a long time, to make this happen. I know the prayers prayed for me were very, very many, for a couple of decades. I can't speak for all of the individuals whose lives God ordered to bring us to this point, but, I know Rod, and I, were not easy subjects.
Anyway, God brought three men together at the right place, at the right time, with the same idea. To one, He gave the position to make it happen. To another, He gave the dream to pray over, taught him to pray, and prepared him for the mission. And, to the last one, He gave the vision and the passion to drive it to the max. Then, He drew others to the team. Each with their own special gifts given to them by their Creator to accomplish His purpose.
So, late in 2007, the plan began to jell. The question was asked: "We're thinking about starting a men's ministry based on the outdoor pursuits of hunting and fishing. Do you want to join us?" "Well, let me think about that.....YES!! Absolutely!" I believe 12 men went to Wake Forest for the God's Great Outdoors "Trail to Adventure" Men's Ministry Conference. Two men had gone in 2007! Jason Cruise (Outdoor Ministries Network), Gerry Caillouett (Founder of God's Great Outdoors), Shaw Grigsby (Top Ranking Professional Fisherman & BASS Champion), Matt McPherson (President of McPherson Guitars & Matthews Bows), Pam Martin-Wells (Top Professional Ladies Fishing Champoin) and many other leaders in Outdoor Ministries instructed, encouraged and challenged us to go forth and multiply.
That's what started the ball rolling. When we returned from Wake Forest, we started pulling it together. We began as God's Great Outdoors, but, eventually became Ridgecrest Outdoor Ministries. We started as a men's ministry, but God made it a family ministry. We discovered a couple of things along the way. We believed that it was our mission to bring people, especially the guys with "a black belt in Redneck" out, like a big, old bass, from their hiding places. We believed that it would take more than just a once-a-year weekend thing with a travelling preacher, some songs, some food and a fond farewell to draw 'em, much less impress 'em with our Lord.
We also knew that if Dad was gonna come, it would be because the kids, and the wife, came, too. That meant we needed to have events that would appeal to the family, AND the Dad. So, we hooked up with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and started with a Hunter Safety Course. We wanted that course to be something special. We have worked at that ever since, regardless of what we're doing. So, we had FOOD! and, lots of it. Even the instructors were impressed.
That's how I got started teaching those classes. Mr. Fred Rorrer, District 5 Training Coordinator, was the facillitator in that venture. Fred was as dedicated to our ministry as we were! He brought the pellet rifle range, archery range, a biologist and even put us on some fish to stock the pond for a Kid's Fishing Tournament! I was so honored to work with Fred, and the other instructors, and Wildlife Officers around District 5. That was a blessing, and continues to be. Lt. Robert Sharpe, WOs Mike Edmisten, Bill Taylor, Seth Reinhart, and many others, have helped to open doors. Hunter Education, as they like to call it these days, has been a mainstay of our ministry. About 20 classes, with more than 200 students from all over the state, have come to pass. In every class, since that first one, the students have been treated like valued guests, and given a godly perspective about the creation ,along with a gospel presentation.
OK, so we started doing fishing tournaments, too. Every year, in June, usually the Saturday after Vacation Bible School, we convert the ball field to an outdoor fishing & hunting extravaganza to draw the kids, and their Dad's, out to fish. We teach 'em how to fish, we give them a pole, some bait, and watch 'em have fun. We have had as many as 172 kids under the age of 13, along with their brothers, sisters, Moms, Dads, Grands, etc. on that field. We reward the ones who catch the biggest in 3 age categories, and give a fishing pole to every kid on the field!
We started holding a Sportsman's Banquet, too, for the families. We wanted to do a Wild Game Dinner, but there are legal challenges involved in that. So, we barbeque a few hundred chickens, who graciously give up their feathered lives to advance the cause of Christ! Hank Parker, Jr. (NASCAR Driver, Professional Outdoorsman and son of Hank Parker) was our first main speaker. Jason Hawkins, Outdoor Writer for Durham Herald-Sun Newspaper) and Larry Jacobs of Jacob's Glass, shared the podium that night. We gave away a Thompson Center black powder rifle, a Matthews Bow Package and many more prizes.
Jr. helped us get Sr. here the following year. Hank Parker, Sr. BASS Master Classic Champion and Outdoor TV Show Host, was our speaker for the September 27, 2008 Sportsman's Banquet. Scott Beavers did some turkey calling, and Billy Gardner called some deer. There were about 750 people in attendance. One, in particular, became a special blessing. I'll cover that later. We gave away the Thompson Center black powder rifle, Matthews Bow and a bunch of other prizes.
Now, remember, Jesus had a special place in His ministry for fishermen! So, we were blessed with another fisherman for the August 1, 2009 Sportsman's Banquet. Remember, we met Shaw Grigsby at the conference in Wake Forest? Well, Shaw said he would come, and he did. Professional fisherman, BASS Champion, host of "One More Cast" TV show on Versus. Shaw brought the boat, the truck, and a great big smile. We did our part, giving away the Thompson Center and the Matthews. This one was probably the biggest banquet, yet. We used a bigger vendor tent, had a yard full of boats, not one, but TWO professional fishermen (Well, one was a lady.) We even had a bride and groom come out of their wedding on the other end of the church and have pictures taken on a bass boat! Turns out that they were fans of Shaw Grigsby! Shaw went back to the sanctuary and smiled for a couple of pictures with them!
The week after Shaw Grigsby came by, Dr. Jim Reimer showed up with Goliath and the Giants. Dr. Reimer, Sportsmen's Outdoor Ministry Events (S.O.M.E), hauls a trailer full of the world's biggest white tail deer. Several hundred people joined us on a Monday night to gawk at those white tails, and listen to one of the formost experts in deer biology. Jim told us what we already knew: "You might not be able to get a guy to come to church to hear about Jesus. But, you might be able to get him to come gawk at a bunch of big deer while you tell him about Jesus!" AMEN, brother!! That's what we're all about!.
We held all of the other events in 2010, but we didn't have a Sportsmen's Banquet. That was the year we expanded and remodeled our facillities.
In 2011, God provided an amazing speaker beyond what anyone expected. Another fisherman, Clay Dyer. Clay was born without arms and legs. That didn't stop him! Rod said: "God gave that boy one thing...a mouth, and he's using it for the glory of his Creator." I know that was the truth. I don't know how that boy ever catches a fish! I had the pleasure of hauling Clay, and his dad, around from the airport, to the church, to the hotel, church, hotel, airport. Yeah, we gave away the Thompson Center and the Matthews and some other stuff, but Clay gave us so much more. He moved across the stage, grabbed a water bottle with his mouth, took a drink, put the bottle down, looked at the crowd and said: "Tell me what you can't do and I will show you how to do it! I can do all things through Christ!"
Somewhere in all of this two things happened that have propelled us forward. Remember I mentioned a special person who came to Hank, Sr.'s night? Well, I was on my way home, to change, when I saw a young man at the pond. We talked, I invited him to the banquet. Even gave him two tickets. Didn't even see him, didn't know he came. One night Hank Parker called Rod King to tell him about a Banquet he had spoken at in Georgia. A man told him that he had seen him at Ridgecrest, that he was fresh out of TROSA, and didn't know what he was going to do with his life. Because of drugs, he had lost his family, his job, everything. And, then, some guy gave him a ticket to a banquet with Hank Parker, and that changed his life. He gave his life to Jesus, went home, regained his family, his life, and started an outdoors ministry at his church. Wait for it: 60 people had come to know the Lord through that ministry! God is good!!! Hank was excited. We were motivated to keep on keeping on.
The other thing that happened is almost as amazing. I guess we didn't have enough to do with fishing tournaments (We were doing the Kid's Fishin' Expos each year, and weigh-ins for Phil McCarson's Piedmont Bass and Crappie Tournament Series), Sportsmen's Banquets, Hunter Education Classes, etc., so God opened the door for us to begin a presence at the premier Sportsman's event in North Carolina. The Wake County Wildlife Club's Dixie Deer Classic! We showed up for the 1st weekend in March, 2011, with a Thompson Center Bone Crusher Black Powder Rifle, signed by Michael Waddell, in person, to give away to some blessed hunter. We raised money for the ministry and gained a lot of recognition.
On that Saturday morning, as I was entering the show, the gentleman who clipped my badge, asked if we could handle the Sunday morning worship service for the vendors and club members. Seems that Cowboys for Christ were not able to be there, so the door was opened to us. Rod about had a heart attack, but Tyson Laney came over to do the music, and it all turned out to the glory of God and opened new doors for the ministry.
While we were at the Classic, we were able to make contact with Jase Robertson, Duck Commander, from Louisiana. We had talked with Jase, and his brother Willie, in Lynchburg, Va without much success. However, Jase's wife was in Raleigh, and we were told that she is the one who tells Jase where to go. So, Jase is on his way here for the August 4, 2012 Sportsman's Banquet. Now, that's pretty cool, but that was before he became a star in the family's TV show: Duck Dynasty.
Another interesting connection story. All of this is real God stuff! A man and his wife came to the 2011 Sportsman's Banquet. Nobody knew that she had cancer. Nobody knew that she would go home to Jesus in pretty short order. That man's name, as most folks know him, is "Bobcat". He owns Bobcats Lake Country Bait and Tackle in Clarksville, Virginia. Bobcat usually brings bus loads of people to our banquets. This time, he brought some folks here to see how we do what we do. They were having their first banquet. They had some guy named Lee McBride coming to speak. Rod, and one of the young men in the church, went to give support, especially since Bobcat's wife had passed. Rod was so impressed with Lee that he asked him to come and share at the Dixie Deer Classic. Lee came, all the way from Alabaster, Alabama. He drove 9 hours to speak for 20 minutes! Rod invited him back to speak at the 2012 Fish Fry we started holding to help raise funds for the Kid's Fishing Expo, and he came! And, he's coming back for the Sportsman's Banquet, August 4th.
Now, Lee McBride, Hidden Hook Ministries, is a pastor and Christian Comedian. He sounds like Jerry Clower ("Shoot up here among us! One of us has got to have some relief!") He'll have you rollin' in the floor, wiping tears, and begging for air! Really! He's that funny!
2013 was a very busy year for the Outdoor Ministries Team. All of the events were great successes and hundreds, even thousands, of people attended the events and were exposed to the wonderful Gospel of Jesus Christ. Phil and Si Robertson, of A&E's Duck Dynasty TV Series were our guest speakers at the 2013 Sportsman's Banquet. There was a HUGE tent in the front parking lot for food and vendors. Lee McBride was onstage in that tent with Si Robertson, asking questions about the Duck Dynasty and receiving questions from the audience, as well. Phil Robertson was speaking in the Gym during those times. We hosted 1000 guests in the food tent, and 1000 more in the gym...at the same time! When the shows were over in each location, we switched them...1000 to the gym, 1000 to the food tent. Of course, they wouldn't all fit in the church building, so they went from the tent to the gym outside. That's when the bottom dropped out, and the Lord provided us with some much needed irrigation. Needless to say, lots of folks got baptized, and, as hard as it rained, I mean baptized...not sprinkled!
As we enter into the 2014 season of ministry, we look forward to seeing many of the people who have supported the ministry, participated in the ministry and encourage this ministry through donations of time, effort, money, door prizes, moved tables and chairs, cooked, served, and prayed to make it all work.
These businesses, individuals and organizations have supported the efforts of Ridgecrest Outdoor Ministries to accomplish the mission of providing exciting, fun, and appropriate events to the community so that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can be shared in an appealing way to the people who love being outdoors.
A special note: There was no Sportsman's Banquet in 2010 due to remodeling work. This list may be incomplete. If you do not see your business's listing, please contact Mark Cline, [email protected]. This list was compiled from the actual Sportsman's Banquet Program Books for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
